About Daniel&Esther

daniel & esther

Daniel works in the consumer electronics industry but hopes to one day own a cafe. Like most Hainanese men, he can whip up a storm in the kitchen and is constantly invited to other people's house parties... to cook for them.

Esther works for a major airline by day, and bakes incessantly by night. Trained as a chemical engineer, she puts that knowledge to good use - by reading package labels to see if it's good for you.

Recipe: Apple Crumble Pie

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

This recipe first came about when I ran into difficulties rolling out my dough properly, thanks to Singapore’s humid weather. Not wanting to risk an ugly and patchy top pastry, I decided to try a crumble topping instead. And to my surprise, the topping has turned out to be everyone’s favourite part of the pie!

Oriole Cafe & Bar

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

I did say earlier that we’d share a little about the food at Oriole Cafe & Bar.
Except this time, I contributed the story to Singapore Kopitiam.
You can check out the full review here.

Oriole Cafe & Bar – Oasis in Midst of Chaos

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Thanks to my colleague Stephanie’s recommendation, I’ve discovered a gem that is a quiet respite from the chaos that is Orchard Road. The place? Oriole Cafe & Bar, located on the ground floor of the Pan Pacific Serviced Suites near Orchard Cineleisure and the new Orchard Central.
I contemplated a long time about posting this, because [...]

New York: The Home of Cheesecake

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

I was in New York a week back, and over the course of four days, subsisted on oversized American portions. From large bowls of Italian pappardelle to my favourite US fast food joint Chipotle Mexican Grill for a burrito fix, the meal I crown “Most damaging to one’s figure” has got to be the dinner [...]

Recipe: Rummy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Every Christmas, I go on a baking rampage and my repertoire always includes baking a huge batch of cookies. While my signature is a version of the Toll House chocolate chip cookie, Daniel requested for a rum and raisin cookie this year to feed his *alcoholic* colleagues. After tweaking a basic online recipe, I found [...]

Wake Up And Smell The Coffee!

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

There’s just something about the smell of coffee that stimulates the senses. When my brother and I were studying in Melbourne some years ago, we loved its amazing cafe culture and enjoyed hanging out in an alfresco cafe enjoying a nice cuppa. So during our recent trip, we simply had to revisit that experience. Here’s [...]

Recipe: Midnight Brownies

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

I confess - I have an unhealthy obssession with baking in the wee hours of the morning. Maybe it’s something programmed in a baker’s genes – “Wake up! It’s 3am. Time to bake.” My regular job operates during the more sane working hours though, so it’s only on rare occasion that I can yield to my [...]
