About Daniel&Esther

daniel & esther

Daniel works in the consumer electronics industry but hopes to one day own a cafe. Like most Hainanese men, he can whip up a storm in the kitchen and is constantly invited to other people's house parties... to cook for them.

Esther works for a major airline by day, and bakes incessantly by night. Trained as a chemical engineer, she puts that knowledge to good use - by reading package labels to see if it's good for you.

Awesome Almond Square Biscuits

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Esther bakes excellent oatmeal raisin cookies. They are always a hit whenever we bring them to the office during Christmas time.
But if you’re looking for more Chinese-y style cookies for Chinese New Year, we love these heavenly almond square biscuits sold at this old-school Kandahar Street bakery called Rich & Good Cake Shop. The [...]

Recipe: Apple Crumble Pie

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

This recipe first came about when I ran into difficulties rolling out my dough properly, thanks to Singapore’s humid weather. Not wanting to risk an ugly and patchy top pastry, I decided to try a crumble topping instead. And to my surprise, the topping has turned out to be everyone’s favourite part of the pie!

London: English Fare

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

London again. On my last trip, I scarcely had enough time to scoff down some roast duck from Bayswater before I had to catch my flight back. With a little more leisure time this trip, I decided to walk a day in English shoes (more like boots since the weather was about 5 deg C), [...]

Dallas Restaurant & Bar: Food to make you go “Yee-har!”

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Daniel’s bro loves his food as much as Daniel, and invited us to try out this restaurant/bar at Boat Quay near his workplace awhile back. Obviously a place that makes its moolah from the bustling bar scene, we fought through the crowd on the ground floor and entered the worryingly empty restaurant area on the [...]

La Petite Cuisine: Homely French Fare

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Where can you find good, honest, home-style French food that is not miserly in portions and doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg? At La Petite Cuisine, of course.
This nondescript hole in the wall cafe, complete with a signboard handwritten in chalk, resides on the ground floor of idyllic Serene Centre better known for [...]

When In Bintan…

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Drink as the Bintanese do.
Bintang Beer – really good stuff, perfect for a hot sunny day at the beach, or to wash down the heat of a spicy Indonesian meal. With a clean and full finish, I daresay this pilsner is better than Tiger.

Relaxing in style with my beach essentials – (clockwise from bottom left) [...]

Recipe: Creamy Sweet Potato Soup

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I’m not a big fan of vegetables and in his attempts to make me eat some, Daniel often resorts to pureeing or grating different veggies into sauces and soups to hide them. One of these successful attempts was a velvety pumpkin soup. Since then, I’ve been totally in love with butternut pumpkin, the sweetness of [...]

Oriole Cafe & Bar

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

I did say earlier that we’d share a little about the food at Oriole Cafe & Bar.
Except this time, I contributed the story to Singapore Kopitiam.
You can check out the full review here.

Oriole Cafe & Bar – Oasis in Midst of Chaos

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Thanks to my colleague Stephanie’s recommendation, I’ve discovered a gem that is a quiet respite from the chaos that is Orchard Road. The place? Oriole Cafe & Bar, located on the ground floor of the Pan Pacific Serviced Suites near Orchard Cineleisure and the new Orchard Central.
I contemplated a long time about posting this, because [...]

Recipe: Spaghetti Vongole

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

It was a lazy Saturday morning at the nearby wet market when we chanced upon some really plump-looking clams, with tightly closed shells (indicating they were alive). Thinking of the half-opened bottle of white wine in our refrigerator, we promptly decided to get a kilogram of these bivalves to make spaghetti vongole for dinner.
After doing [...]
