Sweet Delights in San Francisco
By estar | December 3, 2007
Chocolates form part of my daily diet, so it was imperative that we found some good chocolate on our 8 days’ honeymoon - something Daniel is well aware of (fear the cranky wife!). While some may feel American chocolate just can’t compete with its European counterparts, we found some pretty good ones that can put up a decent fight.
See’s Candies
Although its origins lie in Los Angeles, See’s headquarters now reside in South San Francisco, and it’s easy to see why the locals welcome the association.

Looking at the wide selection of chocolate flavours, from ‘Maple Pecan’ to even ‘Apple Pie’, picking just 24 pieces to fill a box was hard to decide!
We visited See’s Candies at 3 Embarcadero Center, San Francisco, CA 94111.
Ghirardelli
Ghirardelli Square is a must-go for any self-respecting tourist in San Francisco. Located at the west end of Fisherman’s Wharf, this historic landmark is home to the Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop. Even in 12 degree Celsius weather, people still crowd the shop for their Hot Fudge Sundaes (US$6.95 excl. tax), which comes in 2 versions - milk or dark chocolate fudge sauce.

Now that’s a real sundae, McDonalds!
Their chocolates aren’t bad either - judging from the way our colleagues promptly devoured those we brought back to Singapore. We tried their seasonal Christmas special - dark chocolate with peppermint - which was a lovely concoction that tasted like chocolate with bits of candy cane. Sweet… ^^

The famous Ghirardelli Square is located at 900 North Point Street, San Francisco, CA 94109.
XOX Truffles
We actually walked past this nondescript store on Columbus Avenue several times but didn’t realise it housed some of the best award-winning truffles in San Francisco until we neared the end of our trip. Thank God we noticed it in time!

All truffles at XOX are handmade and sold in 1/4 lb, 1/2 lb and 1 lb containers. Not wanting to appear too greedy - hah!, I opted for the smallest container (US$9) which yielded a decent 40 pieces. The smooth ganache-like texture was addictive!

XOX Truffles is at 754 Columbus Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94133.
