Big Breakfasts in San Francisco (Part II)
By daniel | November 28, 2007
It is an understatement to say we ate well in San Francisco. As you can see in Part I, we usually started our day in a big way (when it came to meals).
Caffe Trieste

Caffe Trieste was probably the only place we went that we didn’t really pig out in. Located near our hotel (their North Beach branch), this quirky cafe was packed with people and the reason was obvious. There was this incredibly wonderful smell of baked goods and fresh espresso intermingling and wafting in the morning air. As it happened, Caffe Trieste was famous for its fantastic cookies and so we just had to pick one to try (despite already having had our breakfast!).

Don’t they look lovely? Trust us, the walnut cookie we picked up tasted even better than it looks, especially when coupled with a nice latte.
You can find Caffe Trieste at 601 Vallejo Street.
Mama’s On Washington Square

This tiny eating place (it seats less than 40) located at Stockton Street overlooking Washington Square serves up one of the largest and - in my opinion, at least - the best breakfasts San Francisco has to offer.
Despite its size, Mama’s offers a substantial breakfast menu. Look at what we ordered:

I had an Eggs Florentine (US$9.75) which came as beautifully poached eggs seated on toasted muffins and smothered with cooked spinach and a delectable hollandaise sauce, served with a side of panfried potatoes. Esther had three roti prata-sized Buttermilk Pancakes (US$7.25). Light and fluffy, the pancakes were good with syrup but even better with Mama’s homemade jam, a bottle of which could be found on every table. Rounded off with some sinfully rich Hot Chocolate (US$2.50), such a breakfast is the perfect way to start a chilly day.
Especially if you have to climb all over hilly San Francisco…
Mama’s On Washington Square can be found at 1701 Stockton Street, San Francisco CA 94133.
