About Daniel&Esther

daniel & esther

Daniel works in the consumer electronics industry but hopes to one day own a cafe. Like most Hainanese men, he can whip up a storm in the kitchen and is constantly invited to other people's house parties... to cook for them.

Esther works for a major airline by day, and bakes incessantly by night. Trained as a chemical engineer, she puts that knowledge to good use - by reading package labels to see if it's good for you.

A Quiet Bohemian Hideout in San Francisco

We weren’t certain of where to stay in San Francisco - Esther passed by the city just once and this was my first time to the States - so we picked Hotel Boheme on a whim. And we were glad we did.

This tiny hotel - more like a motel, really - is located on San Francisco’s busy Columbus Avenue in the heart of its North Beach district, surrounded by Italian cafes and restaurants and extremely near Stockton Street where San Francisco’s famous Chinatwon was located.

When we arrived we were greeted by a daunting stairwell, which was a pain to lug luggage up. I had to help a fellow guest carry hers.

Beautifully decked out in a mix of bohemian style and Art Deco, Hotel Boheme exuded a certain confident yet cosy charm that was welcoming and warm. Check out the room we got:

The bedroom was suitably -ahem - romantic, albeit small (we’re on a budget, after all ^^). The toilet - one of the most important criteria - passed Esther’s strict muster, which despite not having a bathtub, could easily match up to bigger, more expensive hotels. Paintings and other decorations saluted the local geniuses from the Beat Generation, such as the likes of Jack Kerouac.

I loved the fact rooms came with free Wifi, which meant I could connect and surf for free with my Samsung i600 smartphone. Also, the hotel is fronted by the amazing Stella Pastry & Cafe, perfect for a morning caffeine hit. Too bad the rooms do not come with breakfast (it’s way too small to contain its own restaurant) but when you’re surrounded by some of San Francisco’s best eating places, does it really matter?

“So when are you going to start EATING?”, I hear you ask.

More to be revealed… =)

Hotel Boheme is located at 444 Columbus Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94133. Tel: 415.433.9111. Email: mail@hotelboheme.com. www.hotelboheme.com.

    hi yenny,

we paid about USD187 per night, which is mid-range for San Francisco accommodations. More familiar names like Hilton and Sheraton are easily above USD250 per night.
