About Daniel&Esther

daniel & esther

Daniel works in the consumer electronics industry but hopes to one day own a cafe. Like most Hainanese men, he can whip up a storm in the kitchen and is constantly invited to other people's house parties... to cook for them.

Esther works for a major airline by day, and bakes incessantly by night. Trained as a chemical engineer, she puts that knowledge to good use - by reading package labels to see if it's good for you.

A History of Japanese Curry

By daniel | October 15, 2007

japanese curry

One of my brother David’s favourite foods, Japanese curry is an interesting take on an Indian favourite. Sweet, slightly spicy and rather sticky, this dish is readily available in most local Japanese restaurants.

What I didn’t know was how the dish originated and evolved over time. You can read more about how Japanese curry began as a meal on board the Imperial Japanese Navy at Citizen Historian.

Now I know why the Japanese add a hint of apple into their curries.
